Sumner County schools make little movement in latest KSHSAA Classification list released today
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Some might consider this to be the biggest sports day of the year in Kansas high school sports. The Kansas State High School Activities Association just released its football and all other sports classification lists. The classifications not only determines the schools post season assignments, but what teams they will be playing in hopes of securing a state championship.
The two year football classification list for 2016-17 and 2017-18 released today is here.
The annual “all other sports†classification list for 2015-16 is listed here.

Analysis:
Wellington –
Football: For Wellington it is always about Andale, and the Indians are in Class 4A Div. 1 after playing two years in Class 4A Div. II. This means Wellington is likely to have to deal with the Indians somewhere down the line in district or a post-season play. Andale was the smallest school in Div. 1 with 320 students. Oh, so close.
Winfield and Ulysses are still in Class 4A Div. 1. After weeks of speculation, Andover Central is still in 4A D1 as is McPherson. All everything Bishop Miege in the Kansas City area is still in the classification which means the state championship may still be out of reach for two more years.
All other sports: The division between D1 and DII will be of keen interest for Wellington. Again, the official list has not been released, but one probably can figure it out with a calculator. Wellington is likely to be Div. 1. Andover Central has dipped from 5A to 4A Div. I. Not sure where Andale is in the pecking order for all other sports.
Six other Sumner County teams –
Football: Wichita Collegiate to the joy of Class 3A has moved up to Class 4A Div. II. Next year, Argonia-Attica will move up to 8-man Div. 1 after being in Div. II these past two years.
All other sports: There was no classification movement for Sumner County schools. Oxford stayed in Class 2A by five students.
