Sumner County track teams prepare for regionals ahead with Wellington Invitational Friday, and Caldwell today
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Friday was the Wellington Invitational. Today it is the Caldwell Border-Queen Relays. Thursday, Wellington trackers head to Circle for an important track meet that will serve as a regional preview of such.
These are the important times for those participating in the original springtime high school sport.
Friday, six of the Sumner County schools got together with Mulvane and Rose Hill to participate in the Wellington Invitational in absolute perfect weather. There was no team scoring as it was a participation meet and schools can put in as many athletes as possible (see full results here). Here are some observation and trends concerning the Sumner County track teams:

Wellington’s Anna Cullens has set a new school record in the 100 hurdles. She easily won first in both hurdles races in Wellington on Friday.
•One can argue, Wellington sophomore Anna Cullens is as successful in track as she is in girls wrestling. The 109-pound wrestling state champion has traded her singlet for track shoes and is currently leading the state in both the 110 meter and 300 hurdles.
On Friday she won the 100 hurdles with a 14.99 time. That is after breaking the school record on Tuesday in Clearwater with a 14.95 time. That knocked off a 15-year record set by Sarah Jean Mitchell, who ran it in 15.91 in 2006. She also has the best time by a second in 4A in the 100 hurdles. In the 300, she ran a 47.86, almost three seconds in front of Rose Hill’s Aubrie Thomison, who finished second with a 50.38 time.
“The thing about Anna, we were running her in the 400,” said Zane Aguilar, head Wellington track coach. “(Assistant) Coach (Charles) Wallace suggested not having her run it in Clearwater to keep her legs fresh for the hurdles. I guess that is why he has been around the sport for so long. He just knows things.”
•Wellington’s Dustyn Schettler, who could be a significant force on the gridiron next fall as running back, is nursing a sore hamstring. He still was able to get first in the long jump, with a leap of 20-feet. 4.5 inches. He did not run the 100 or 200. But Aguilar hopes he will do so by regional time.
•Wellington sophomore Montel Tate was dominant on Friday. He won the 100 with an 11.53 time and second in the 200 at 24.17. He finished second in the long jump, losing only to teammate Schettler with a 19.10 leap.
•Dylan Dickenson, a Wellington junior, won the 400 meters with a 54.17 time.
•Gavin York, a Wellington senior and the only track athlete to have state track meet experience, placed first in the 110 meters and 300 meters, running them in 15.91 and 42.23 respectively.
•Keep your eye on the 4×100 relay teams for both the boys and girls. The boys consisting of Trace Rusk, Caiden Hamilton, Green, and Dickenson placed second to Rose Hill, but that may not be the starting lineup come regional time. In the girls, Cullens, Sadie Glover, Kami Reichenberger, and Whitney Zeka ran the 4×100 meter relay and finished a close second against Rose Hill. Expect that team to have a legitimate shot at state. Again, that may not be the lineup going into regionals.
•Wellington senior Colin Green was tops in the pole vault with an 11-6 leap.
•Wellington junior Ali Zeka, who seems to excel in every sport she participates in, placed first in the long jump with a 16-5 leap.
•Missouri Southern-bound football lineman Kenny Fehrman (changing from Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D.), finished first in the shot put with a 47.95 throw. Aguilar said he is closing in on the elusive 50-foot throwing mark.

Kenzie Wenke of Conway Springs in the 100-meter dash. She would win the high jump in Wellington with a 5-0 leap.
•Conway Spring had four first-place finishers: Lance Pauly in the triple jump with a 42-2.5, Kenzie Wenke in the high jump with a 5-0 leap, Katelyn Koester in the shot put with a 31-11.25 throw and Karlie Biehler in the discus with a 99-4 throw.
•A couple of South-Central Border League athletes got first place in Wellington: Alivia Bacon of South Haven won the 1600 meters with a 5:55.97 time, and Lauren Payne of Oxford threw the javelin at 107-1.
