Sumner Court Docket: Nov. 12, 2014 report (part 1)

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow â€” The following are a list of criminal court complaints recently filed by the Sumner County Attorney’s office.

These are formal charges introduced into the Sumner County District Court system. The suspects listed in the complaint have not been tried by a judge or jury unless specified otherwise. All citizens are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Lars Bergman, born in 1985, of South Haven was charged with five counts of criminal use of a financial card, a Class A misdemeanor.

Bergman is accused on August 4, 2014 of ordering and paying for $41.99 worth of pizza from Pizza Hut while at another man’s apartment with a stolen debit card. He then allegedly used the same debit card to purchase pizza again from Pizza Hut on August 5 at another apartment for $58.99.

On August 11, he used the same debit card to order $84.70 worth of pizza from Pizza Hut at another apartment. On August 13, he ordered $47.08 worth of pizza from the second person’s residence.

Bergman is also accused of taking a Toshiba laptop computer.

Bergman’s case has been continued to Nov. 13.

Sherry Lynn Howard of Wellington was charged with driving under the influence, the third offense in a lifetime. She had been convicted in Oxford Municipal Court in January, 2008 and Sedgwick County District Court in May, 2009.

On Oct. 4, she was also charged with transporting an open container, an unclassified misdemeanor; refusal of PBT, a traffic infraction; and failing to maintain one lane, a traffic infraction on Oct. 4.

Howard’s case has been continued to Nov. 13.

Curtis Callaway, born in 1984, of Wellington was charged with burglary of a dwelling, a level 7 felony; and theft, a level 9 felony.

Callaway is accused on July 25 at around 2:30 to 3 a.m. of entering a residence at 306 W. 12th in Wellington on July 25 and stealing several items including guns and checks.

He allegedly took a leather wallet containing $140 in cash, a drivers’ license, a social security card, a Remington .22 pump hexagon barrel rifle, Marlin 30/30 level action rifle, Remington 12 gauge pump shotgun, Winchester 12 gauge pump shotgun, Remington 12 gauge automatic shot gun, ammunition, two rifle scopes, Security State checkbook, Impact Bank checkbook, sheets, bed spread, Trac phones and bowling pins (see related story here). http://www.sumnernewscow.com/pearson-charged-with-2-felonies-of-burglary-of-elderly-man-callaway-at-large/

Nicholas Ralph, born in 1993, of Derby was charged with burglary of vehicle, a level 9 felony; theft, a level 9 felony; burglary of a non dwelling, a level 7 felony; attempted theft, a level 10 felony; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

Ralph and Corey Grove, born in 1974, of Rose Hill are accused on July 7, 2014 between 4 and 8 a.m. of breaking into a white GMC truck at 590 N. Rock Road and stealing various tools while the owner was doing fieldwork in a nearby field and placing the tools in a trailer pulled behind a camouflage colored 4-wheeler. He also allegedly siphoned gasoline from the gas tank.

Then later at a barn located at 770 N. Greenwich Road in Belle Plaine, Grove and Ralph are accused of stealing a 4-wheeler. The owner allegedly discovered Grove inside the barn, who had started his yellow Honda ATV without his permission. Allegedly, Grove and Ralph were going to steal the ATV so their friend would have one to drive since the one he had been driving had a flat tire.

Ralph and Grove were charged with attempted theft because they allegedly was intending to steal the yellow ATV but because the owner had arrived before getting away, they left it behind.

On the same night, Ralph an Grove are accused of stealing electrical wiring, sockets, and brass plumbing fitting from a residence at 480 N. Rock. He allegedly placed items in a trailer which they hid in some brush as daylight approached.

Derek Hurley, born in 1995, of Newkirk, Okla. pled guilty to theft,  a level 9 felony.

Hurley was accused on Nov. 1, 2013 of stealing a car off the street near 202 S. Jefferson in Wellington between 9 and 10:40 a.m. He broke out a window of a 1990 Dodge Shadow to gain entry into the car.

Then on Nov. 6, 2013 in the early morning hours he stole a 2005 White Chevy Silverado pickup at 1107 N. Jefferson.

On Nov. 9, 2013, he allegedly stole a 2003 Dodge Dakota Quadcab pickup from 310 W. 4th. He then allegedly attempted to elude officers after allegedly stealing a Silverado pickup. Hurley was sentenced to 16 months in prison for the offense.

Edwood Osborne was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.

Osborne’s case has been continued to Nov. 20.

Nathan Rowe, born in 1992, of Wellington was charged with domestic battery, a felony – third offense; and violation of protective order, a Class A misdemeanor.

Rowe was convicted in Wellington Municipal Court of domestic battery on Feb. 19 and Aug. 6, 2014, and was given credit for 12 days in jail and placed on probation for one year with special conditions including counseling and no contact with a specific woman. He is accused on August 19 of approaching the woman, who was staying with her brother. Upon arrival, the woman was outside and Rowe allegedly came by and started talking to her even though his probation officer said he was not authorized to do so.

Allegedly, they started arguing and he threatened to “choke her out.” This scared her and she punched him and tried to run away but she fell and Rowe allegedly caught her and started choking her. The woman’s brother allegedly her the commotion and yelled at Rowe who then allegedly ran away.

John Quincy Ramsey, born in 1986, of Caldwell was charged with violation of protective order, a Class A misdemeanor; and criminal trespass, a Class B misdemeanor.

Ramsey is accused on Oct. 10 of violating a protection from stalking order which prohibited Ramsey from having contact with a specific woman. He allegedly violated the order by going to the residence in Caldwell and speaking directly to her. He is also accused of not immediately leaving when the woman told him to do so and instead persisted in trying to convince her to drop the restraining order previously issued against him.

Ramsey’s court case has been continued to Nov. 20 at 9 a.m.

Kevin Weaver of Wellington was charged with driving under the influence – his third offense in a lifetime, a felony. He had previously been convicted of a DUI Diversion in Hays Municipal Court in July 2002 and Wellington Municipal Court in November, 2011.

He was also charged with refusing to submit to a preliminary screening test of breath for alcohol concentration on Oct. 12, 2014.

Weaver’s court case has been continued to Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m.

James Gressel, born in 1993, of Wellington was charged with theft, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.

Gressel is accused on Oct. 16, 2014, of taking a 2015 vehicle registration decal sticker from his neighbor’s car at 115 E. 19th in Wellington and putting it on his girlfriend’s car because he knew her sticker had expired. He is also accused of having a clear plastic bag containing a white residue and a flashlight containing more white residue in the battery compartment which tested positive for methamphetamine.

Gressel’s case has been continued to Nov. 20

Season Amos, born in 1979, of Wichita was charged with criminal trespass, a Class B misdemeanor; interference with law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor; and obstructing apprehension or prosecution of a felon, a level 8 felony

Amos is accused on Oct. 18, 2014 of unlawfully entering a residence knowingly she was not authorized or privileged to do so after the person who was living there was preparing to move out. According to the complaint she was with Curtis Callaway at the time.

After an officer responded to a report that two people had entered the residence without permission, Amos allegedly told the officer that she was the only one in the residence although she knew Calloway was hiding in another room.

Amos’ case has been continued to Dec. 4.

Claude Hale, born in 1972, of Mayfield was charged with giving a worthless check, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to a sworn affidavit, Eric Johnson, owner of Bathtub Man, LLC in Maize, on July 23, said Hale of Prestige Homes, Inc. presented a check to Johnson for services including bathtub repair and other refinishings at his residence at 732 S. Chikaskia Road in Mayfield. When he deposited the check it was returned unpaid due to insufficient funds.

On Aug. 4, at about 9:34 a.m., Johnson sent a text message to Hale and asked to contact him. Hale told him he could send a cashier’s check, but allegedly never did. After several inquiries, the case was handed over to the county attorney’s office.

Travis Deakins, born in 1982, of Wellington was charged with driving while revoked as habitual violator, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a level 5 drug felony- second offense; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.

Deakins is accused on Oct. 12 of driving a green Ford Explorer on 15th Street and U.S. 81 in Wellington when his driving privileges were revoked as a habitual violator for three years starting on Feb. 3, 2012. He also allegedly had a baggy of marijuana and a glass smoking pipe in his coat pocket.

Deakins case has been continued to Nov. 13.

Timothy Schreffler, born in 1995, of Mulvane and Evan Tillison, born in 1995, of Wichita were charged with burglary of a dwelling, a level 7 felony; and conspiracy to commit burglary of a dwelling, a level 9 felony.

Schreffler and Tillison are accused of committing a theft at a residence at 408 S. Central in Mulvane. Tillison is accused of entering the house through an open window and Schreffler handed him a baseball bat through the open window to use as a tool for protection to facilitate stealing from the house.

Schreffler’s case has been continued to Nov. 13.  Tillison’s case has been continued to Nov. 20.

Corey Troutman, born in 1991, of Wellington was charged with furnishing alcohol to minor, a Class B misdemeanor on Nov. 27, 2013.

Jacob Grewing, born in 1986, of Wichita was charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor, a Class B misdemeanor on March 8, 2014.

William Baker, born in 1980, of Wichita was charged with making false information, a level 8 felony.

Baker is accused of filling out a signed W-9 form using a the false name of another person and a false social security number to avoid reporting a $7,000 win on his income taxes.

Michael Lee, born in 1969, of Wichita was charged with disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor; criminal trespass, a Class B misdemeanor; assault of law enforcement officer, a Class A misdemeanor; and interference with law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.

Lee is accused on Oct. 26 at the Kansas Star Casino of using loud, angry profanity and threats at the dice table when he was asked not to do so. He then allegedly would not leave when asked to do so. He then was accused of showing disrespect for the security officer’s badge and threatening him with bodily harm as Lee stepped toward him.

He then allegedly resisted physical arrest before getting handcuffed.

Lee pled guilty on Nov. 6 to interference with a law enforcement officer.

Julie McKamie, born in 1982, of Orchard Lee Summit, Mo. was charged with expired tag, a misdemeanor; driving while suspended, a Class B misdemeanor; no insurance, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.

On October 29 on U.S. 81 near Mulvane, McKamie is accused of driving with no tag, insurance or driver’s license. When also allegedly had a glass methamphetamine pipe inside a multicolored bag in the backseat of the vehicle she was driving.

McKamie’s case has been continued to Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m.
