South Sumner 74 Wichita Independent 28

Wichita Independent has been garnering lots of press after turning around its program this year. After winning just three games from 2017-2021, the Panthers were 5-0 going into Friday’s game.

But South Sumner crashed the party.

After a relatively close first half between two unbeaten teams, the South Sumner Outlaws scored 32 unanswered points in the third quarter on their way to a 74-28 win over Wichita Independent.

South Sumner led 14-6 after one quarter and 28-14 at the half.

Independent scored to open the third quarter and cut the deficit to 28-20.

That touchdown came on a 47-yard run. South Sumner responded by returning the kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown to put the lead back at 36-20.

From there, it was all South Sumner. Outlaw quarterback Keiondre Smith scored three touchdowns to end the third quarter and give South Sumner a 60-28 lead. The Outlaws would add two touchdowns in the fourth to pick up a 46-point win.

South Sumner had 445 yards rushing on 54 plays and 85 yards passing. Wichita Independent had 216 yards rushing and 42 passing. Smith passed for 85 yards and had 224 yards rushing.

This was the most points South Sumner has scored this season, but that was due to the Outlaws playing a second half. In the previous five contests, the games were called at the half.
