Sunday blog: Quinn returns 5 years later with 5 more thoughts
Editor’s Note — We are handing this week’s Sunday blog/editorial to my youngest son Quinn, who is now a freshman at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. He once was the author of “Five Quinn’s Thoughts” back when he was in middle school. Just a reminder, Sumner Newscow will publish guest editorial/columns from anyone about anything of public interest in the community, provided it doesn’t get us sued. Be creative and have fun and keep it short in length. No poetry! – TLM.
Commentary by Quinn McCue, Sumner Newscow — Hey hey hey! Long ago I used to do Quinn’s thoughts here in order to lift spirits with my childish antics. Seeing now that I’m 19, I thought I’d be a bit more professional. Just a bit, mind you.
Quinn thought No. 1 — Congratulations to the class of 2021 for getting to your final semester. Here’s some advice from someone in your shoes. First and foremost DO NOT SLOW DOWN! It’s so tempting and easier said than done but I promise you the final stretch is worth paying attention to and never ever take a moment for granted. Even amidst a global pandemic I still relish the amazing times in Cru-Con. Secondly, they say that High School prepared you for college. This is a blatant lie. Yes, it is important to learn building blocks to tougher topics in college classes. Nothing quite prepares you to care for yourself and manage your own time quite like your first semester. I’m still trying to master it and it’s just so much fun. This isn’t to scare you for college I’ve had such an amazing time my first semester. Just be aware that it’s a whole new beast so you’re not blindsided.
Quinn thought No. 2 — To all the students not graduating in 2021. I hope you’re having fun! High School can seem like an absolute drag when you’re in it. It can seem like all your life is classes and drama. I promise you that if you’re struggling now you will get through it. Remember and cherish the times you have with your classmates, even the ones that make you wanna get that diploma even faster. After you walk that stage (or in my case walk into the front office dawning a mask), that’s it, it’s done. Nothing will ever be the same and there’s no rewind. It’s good to move on, don’t get me wrong, but be aware that this is a one-time deal so enjoy it while you can.
Quinn thought No. 3 — A little advice to my dear seniors that will be attending college next year. Buy a vacuum! Even if it’s just a handheld little thing it will become a savior almost every Sunday when you look at the floor wondering if you even ate chips that week. Secondly, also get a mattress topper unless you wanna back problems right out of the gate. Also as tempting as it might be to just chill in your dorm and not talk to anyone, make friends, and especially make some in your classes. They will single-handedly keep you sane, trust me on that one.
Quinn thought No. 4 — Who even invented math. Like I get it’s crazy important to our lives and an amazing concept that is an art form in its own right but oh my goodness am I over infinite series. Thank the Lord I’m not in a place of power or those would’ve been illegal so quick. I’m a Biochem Major and I thought I escaped math but chemistry is just spicy physics and physics is just spicy math. There’s literally no escape. Even music is just math on a schedule. Math is important but oh my goodness am I bad at it.
Quinn thought No. 5 — So as you can see from my last four thoughts college is going super well! I’m honestly so lucky I’m privileged enough to have the experiences that I do and a family that supports me. I won the lottery with the figures in my life. Especially my teachers. The ones who were kind, the ones who pushed me to be my best, and the legendary ones who did both. As there is a global pandemic still going on and a vaccine reaching the common man’s doorstep is still a way out. Remember to thank the parents and teachers that have to adapt to these times as well as the medical professionals who risk everything in order to give us the best chance to see another day. Better than thanking them is making sure you’re doing your part in order to keep all of us safe. We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’ll get there, together.
Well, that’s about as sappy as I get. I hope to see y’all around for another one of these. Stay groovy and have a wonderful week. – Quinn.
