by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It has been almost three weeks since the Wellington girls volleyball team participated in its first state tournament in school history but the awards and recognition keep coming. And perhaps this year’s group’s most significant contribution of all, is the rewriting the records book.

It is hard to fathom a more dominating year in a single sport when it comes to breaking records in the WHS history book. But the 2015 WHS volleyball team has broken records in six of the seven categories this year and is in the top three 11 different times. Individually, including records not listed on the WHS record board, five girls: McKenna Oathout, Abby Goodrum, Siarah Walker, Erin Goodrum, and Tayland French; have broken records in 2015.

Whew.

The 2015 Wellington High School Volleyball team reached the Class 4A Div. 1 state volleyball tournament in Salina, after winning the sub-state in Winfield the week before.

In the process, the current records broken were

Siarah Walker

Siarah Walker broke the season kills record with 315, breaking the 241 record set by Christina McQuin with 241. Abby Goodrum also topped McQuin with 274.

McKenna Oathout

McKenna Oathout broke the school’s serving percentage record with a 97.1 percent rate in 2015. Brooke Biles had a 97 percent rate in 2009.

Abby Goodrum

Walker scored the most points in WHS volleyball history with 369. Points in volleyball include kills, ace serves and blocks. The old record was set by McQuin with 309. Abby Goodrum had 337.

Erin Goodrum

In the assists department, Erin Goodrum had 776. Nobody else has close. Erica Raschke had 465 in 2006.

Tayland French

As far as serves received, Abby Goodrum now holds the record with 91.5 percent. McKenna Oathout has 90.4, Tayland French 89.5. The previous record was McQuin with 75.6.

The Defensive digs record also came crumbling down in 2015. Oathout now owns the record with 500 and Abby Goodrum had 325. Courtney Goodrum held the previous record of 276.

The only record Wellington did not make was in blocks. McQuin holds that record at 170 in 2006.
