by Amber Countryman, Sumner Newscow — The Lough Brothers musical group was born eight years ago, while performing at a local talent show. They began with two members, Mason, now 19, and Hunter, now 16. Recently, they have added their younger brother, Brodee, 13, to the group.

“The musical talent started with Mason,” said Hunter. “Our family has always been artistically talented, but not in the ways Mason started. The music starts with him.”

On Thursday, July 22, the Lough Brothers will perform live at the Regent Theater at 7 p.m. There is no admission charge. Concessions will be available for purchase.

When Mason Lough was two years old, he was given a rubber roll-out toy piano.

“I learned really basic stuff like Mary Had A Little Lamb on it,” Lough said. “Eventually, we got an actual piano. At that point, I started learning more advanced stuff, so my parents put me in lessons.”

At age 10, Mason posted a cover of “Colder Weather” by Zac Brown on YouTube. A Wichita radio station saw it and sent it to the Zac Brown Band. Lough was given a pass to a meet and greet with the band, and a ticket to their upcoming concert.

“I got to eat and chat with the band, and at the end, their pianist asked if I wanted to play “Colder Weather” onstage,” Lough said. “Being on stage playing to a sold-out crowd is definitely what sparked my interest in playing live music.”

A couple of months later, Mason and Hunter Lough performed live together for the first time as the Lough Brothers during the Kansas Wheat Festival talent show. They performed the Blake Shelton song “Honey Bee,” with Mason on guitar, and Hunter singing. They won first place in the talent show during their first live performance together. The following year, they won the talent show again.

The sibling musical group has released two singles, “Love Faking Girl” and “This Could Be Us”. In the future, they hope to release an entire album of their music. All three boys sing, but while performing, it’s normally just Mason and Hunter, with Brodee occasionally showing off his skills. Mason plays piano, acoustic and electric guitar, alto saxophone, and ukulele. Hunter plays the bass guitar, piano, acoustic guitar, trumpet, French horn, and ukulele. Brodee can play the trapset, box drum, ukulele, and acoustic guitar.

During a normal, pandemic-free summer, they perform every other weekend.

“We got to a very high point in performances before all the bad happened,” Hunter said. “Getting back into it, we’ve had multiple performances, about every other week.”

The group performs all over south-central Kansas. They have even traveled to Nashville, Tenn. to perform in venues such as the Bluebird Café.

Mason, Hunter, and Brodee Lough have a younger sister and two younger brothers who love to sing but aren’t in the band just yet. Parents of the talented sibling group are LaRance and Carrie Lough, who love music but have never performed or played an instrument.

“Because of the age difference, we’ll probably not perform together, but we hope to continue the love of music down to them,” Hunter said.

Throughout middle and high school, Mason was involved in choir and band. He was named drum major his senior year. He will be a sophomore at Oklahoma State University this fall, where he is studying to become an environmental biologist.

The Lough Brothers during a summer fund-raiser at the school to raise funds for the choir who would head to New York six months later.

He plays alto sax in the college’s Cowboy marching band. Hunter is involved in the Wellington High School choir and was in the band until recently. Brodee is involved in both band and choir at Wellington Middle School. The brothers have also performed in plays for both school and the Wellington Community Children’s Theater.

Besides performing at local talent shows and various venues, the band has also performed at weddings, bars, fairs, and other occasions featuring live music.

Those interested in booking the band can call 620-660-9259, or send them a message through their Lough Brothers Facebook page, or Instagram @lo_bros_official.

Again, don’t miss their free live performance at the Regent on Thursday at 7 p.m.
