Mario Alberto Gonzalez-Cueller was driving northbound at 10 p.m. on Saturday on I-35 when he lost control of his 1999 Ford Explorer and left the roadway on the right side. He then overcorrected, struck a barrier wall, and overturned. A 2014 Toyota Corolla, driven by Truong Van Nguyen, 66, of Wichita, then struck the Explorer. Van Nguyen had minor injuries.
Gonzalez-Cueller was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers had minor injuries.
The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed a secondary crash occurred while enforcement/emergency personnel were cleaning up the first accident. Traffic was stopped in the northbound lane of I-35.
While two vehicles were stopped in the right lane of traffic, Roy Busby, 58 of Hutchinson, was heading northbound driving a 2018 International pulling a semi-trailer when he hit the right side of a 2020 Ford F260 pickup, driven by Steve Jatala of Olathe. The pickup then hit a 2020 Honda CRV driven by Carlos Rice of Wichita.
