Two fires burn out of control in Wellington area Sunday

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — There were two field fires which occurred Sunday, March 22, according to a Wellington Fire Department press release.

The first fire occurred on 50th Street and Meridian. The second one was on 129 East 10th Avenue. There was no monetary loss to either fire.

The Meridian fire started at 1:18 p.m. on the property owned by A.J. Reed and was caused by sparks from a cutting metal pipe which moved rapidly to the north burning 80 acres. It took an hour to bring under control. One shed was in danger but suffered no damage.

The fire on East 10th occurred on the Roger Brownlee property. It was a controlled fire which became out of control and burned 160 acres before it was brought under control after two hours of fire suppression. Both fires were managed by the efforts of five different fire departments that included South Haven, Oxford, Mayfield, Argonia and Wellington. There were 13 fire personnel fighting one or both fires.

No one was injured.
