Two pickups collide west of Oxford Thursday resulting in one injury

by Shane Farley and Tracy McCue — An accident Thursday evening near Oxford sent one man to the hospital with broken bones, according to a report from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department.

James R. Mills, 41, of Wichita, was injured around 6:30 p.m. when his 2008 Ford F-250 drifted across the center line and collided with a 2003 Chevy Silverado. Robert W. Schuster, 63, of Ponca City was driving the Chevy.

Schuster told investigators that Mills may have been texting, however authorities have yet to speak with Mills to inquire about that.

Mills was westbound on U.S. 160 highway when he approached the Schuster vehicle, which was pulling a 16-foot trailer full of wooden fencing. The Mills vehicle struck the side mirror of the Schuster vehicle and then collided with the trailer.

The report indicated Mills was trapped in his vehicle for a time. He was transported from the scene by air ambulance and taken to Via Christi on St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Traffic on U.S. 160 was temporarily delayed.

Mills suffered multiple open fractures to his legs. A hospital spokesperson said he was in fair condition this morning. Schuster was not injured.

Mills’ truck and Schuster’s trailer were totaled, according to a report.
