by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington varsity girls basketball team took a little while to get rolling, but when the Crusaders did, they rolled to an easy 74-39 road win over Winfield at its place Tuesday night.

The Crusader improved to 10-0 and now sets its sights on the Mulvane Tournament next week. Winfield fell to 5-5. This was a rematch of a previous matchup before Christmas break in which Wellington beat Winfield 57-34.

In the early going Wellington was getting some turnovers but was unable to convert, and Winfield controlled the boards. Wellington got few second chances in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter Wellington led 15-14.

Wellington head coach Eric Adams said they adjusted their passing to get more touches at the end of the first quarter.

“They also hold each other accountable,” Adams said. “When they are not playing as well, they talk to each other. That makes coaching easier.”

Wellington went on a 16-3 run in the first four minutes of the second quarter to take a 31-17 lead. In that stretch the Crusaders made 11 of 13 free throws and made 15 of 17 for the quarter.

Wellington led 37-24 at the half. If there was any question where the game was going, it was answered resoundingly as Wellington slammed shut and bolted the door. Brit Zeka hit back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive possessions, and Wellington went on a 17-0 run before the dust cleared. Winfield did not score for about six minutes of clock time.

With a 62-33 lead heading into the final quarter, the clock ran continuously.

Britt Zeka had 22 points for Wellington, with four three-pointers. Ashlyn Gerten had 19, Valerie Norwood, 15 and Ali Zeka 7.

For Winfield Alea Moree had 14 points and Neveah Green added nine.

Wellington finished 17-20 at the free throw line and had 26 field goals. Winfield was 10-20 at the line and had and 13 field goals.

The Crusaders and Vikings may see one another again. Both are going to the Mulvane Tournament.
