Virginia Lee Rickards, 95, South Haven: May 16, 1926 – April 3, 2022

Virginia Lee Rickards died Sunday, April 3, 2022, in Andover at the age of 95.

She was born the daughter of Roy Elmer and Alma Pearl (Pruett) Milligan on May 16, 1926, Southeast of South Haven. She was the youngest of four girls.

Virginia married Emil Scott in Wellington. To this union, two daughters and five sons were born. He died on November 12, 1970.

Virginia went to Wichita and took a nurses’ aide course and went on to work at St. Francis Hospital on the cardiac floor always working the second shift. After working a year there, her head nurse told her she should go to school and get her LPN. She could work at the hospital on the weekends. After graduation from LPN school, Virginia went on to take extra classes in pharmacology. She started working at St. Luke’s Hospital in Wellington. 

On January 27, 1979, Virginia married Earl Rickards at South Haven Methodist Church. Together they celebrated 29 years of marriage before his passing on October 30, 2008.  When Earl had surgery she decided to quit working at the hospital and help out at home, which she enjoyed. During this time she served on the South Haven Rest Home Board. 

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Geier (Richard) of Augusta; son, Virgil Scott (Linda) of Afton, Oklahoma; son, Larry Scott (Christy) of Wellington; son, Lester Scott (Deborah) of Tampa, Florida; son, Brad Scott (Kathie) of South Haven; daughter-in-law, Josie Scott of Burbank, Oklahoma; 8 granddaughters, 8 grandsons, 24 great-granddaughters, 18 great-grandsons and 4 great-great-granddaughters.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands and sisters, Helen Byers, Gladys Martin, Dorothy Strickland, daughter Ann Gressel, son Ranger Scott,  and grandson Cory Scott.

Graveside services for Virginia will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in South Haven.

A memorial fund has been established in her loving memory to Good Shepherd Hospice, 1323 North A Street, Wellington  67152, and South Haven Community Church, 314 North Main, South Haven 67140. Contributions may be mailed or left with the funeral home.
