WEEK #1 PREVIEW: Dukes hope to take down Goddard; plus plenty of other Sumner County action

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The 10 month off-season will officially end Friday night when seven Sumner County teams get on the gridiron and start playing some football. Since we just finished our Sumner Newscow previews (see previews of Wellington, SCBL, and CPL here), we’ll do some quick analysis of the upcoming Friday game itself. Also included is a CJ Online computer point spread, courtesy of the Topeka Capital Journal. Remember, we didn’t set the spread so don’t call us!

Reminder we will be having a live twitter feed Friday night on this site updating you of the latest action. We currently have sources in all the towns ready to give you an update of the game. For you guys on the road, just follow Cueballnewscow at twitter.com.

We will also have stories and statistical information thereafter.

Let’s roll.

WELLINGTON AT GODDARD:

Wellington (0-0) and Goddard (0-0). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Follow the game: Twitter: Cueballnewscow. Radio: Adrian Young, play-by-play, KLEY-AM 1130. Television: Sumner Cable TV, Channel 5 (audio). Photos and recaps: Wellington.cc and Sumner Newscow.

Game night weather: Highs early in the game will be in the 90s before lowering into the 70s as night breaks. Remember this when game time temperatures are in the 20s in late October and November.

The Topeka Capital-Journal computer point spread: Goddard by 2.6 points. Wellington’s special teams have been practicing their .6 point kicking.

Series history:

The two teams had a spirited history in the 1980s and 90s, especially in 1990 and 1991 when playoffs were on the line. But that information is not available to Sumner Newscow at the moment. Wellington lost to Goddard 34-14 in Sellers Park in 2012.

What to expect from the opponent: Goddard returns six offense and eight defensive starters from the previous season. Although the Lions went 4-6 in 2012, they made the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Goddard scored 20.9 points per game including Tucker Vang, who returns as the starting quarterback.

2013 season thus far:

Wellington:

Sept. 6 Goddard away
Sept. 13 Concordia home
Sept. 20 Augusta away
Sept. 27 Collegiate home
Oct. 4 Circle home
Oct. 11 Andale away
Oct. 18 Clearwater away
Oct. 25 Mulvane home
Oct. 31 Winfield away

Goddard:

Sept. 6 – Wellington, home.

Sept. 12 – Valley Center, away.

Sept. 20 – Andover Central, home

Sept. 27 – Maize, away.

Oct. 4 – Maize South, home.

Oct. 11 – Andover, home.

Oct. 18 – Liberal, away.

Oct. 25 – Bishop Carroll, away.

Nov. 1 – Goddard Eisenhower, home.

Game’s significance: It’s always good to get the season off on the right foot. Outside that, the game won’t mean anything as far as league or post-season play is concerned.

Injury situation: Andrew Horn, a senior starting running back, was seen on crutches this week after getting hurt in practice on Monday.

UDALL AT ARGONIA-ATTICA at Argonia: CJ COMPUTER POINT SPREAD: Udall by 53.2 points.

Not sure how they determine that Argonia got three home games and Attica got two. But this is the first of three home dates for the first ever A&A Titans in Argonia.

Should be a good one. Udall is slated to finish second in the SCBL. A&A could be much improved with combined forces. We think it will be closer than the 53.2 point spread.

BELLE PLAINE AT CHENEY: CJ COMPUTER POINT SPREAD: Cheney by 36.5 points.

The Dragons usher in the Jason Jinkins era. Cheney finished 4-5. Considering the next two weeks ahead, Belle Plaine needs to pick up a big win here.

CENTRAL-BURDEN AT CALDWELL: CJ COMPUTER POINT SPREAD: Central-Burden by 18.2 points.

As far as the SCBL race is concerned, this could be huge. Central, coached by Romney Runyan, has a strong nucleus returning. Caldwell hopes to pick up where it last left off after its impressive post-season run.

CONWAY SPRINGS AT BLUESTEM – CJ COMPUTER POINT SPREAD: Conway Springs by 67.7 points.

Conway Springs has a lot of question marks this season as far as starters go. Bluestem has had little success. This should be a nice experience building game for the Cards.

SUNRISE ACADEMY AT OXFORD: CJ COMPUTER POINT SPREAD: No point spread given.

Talk about going into a game blind. Sunrise Academy is not even a KSHSAA team. Oxford was supposed to play Attica the first weekend before it combined with Argonia and vacated the schedule. This was a last-minute pickup for the Cats.

SOUTH HAVEN AT NORWICH: CJ COMPUTER POINT SPREAD: South Haven by 77.9 points.

The Cardinals have a lot of holes to fill so inexperience will be a factor. But Norwich’s program has suffered from numbers as of late. South Haven should win. Considering you can only win by 50 points, the Cardinals are not likely to cover the spread.
