Wellington 16-under girls drop first two games in World Series

by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow —  After a close game to start the day, Wellington had one really bad inning in game two losing to Kinnelon, New Jersey, the Mid-Atlantic Champions, 11-2 in the second game of the 16-under Babe Ruth Girls Softball World Series in Jensen Beach, Fla. Saturday. Earlier in the day, Wellington lost to North Volusia Athletic Club (Florida) 2-1.

The Wellington girls play again Sunday at 9:15 a.m. against the Hoquiam All Stars from the state of Washington. There will be a bracket elimination tournament thereafter once the pool play games are completed — a championship and a consolation bracket. Wellington head coach Shawn DeJarnett said chances are Wellington will be placed in the consolation bracket after today’s losses.

In the latter ball game, Wellington stayed with Kinnelon for five innings, but the wheels came off in the sixth inning.

Wellington got two runs in its half of the sixth, and trailed 5-2, appearing poised for a comeback.

But in the bottom of the sixth Wellington added three more errors and gave up several hits, and Kinellon scored six runs.

Wellington gave up 11 hits and had six errors, which was too much to overcome. The Wellington team had three hits and Kinnelon had three errors.

For Wellington, Siarah Walker had a single with an RBI. Taylor Zimmerman and Madison Lewellen each added singles.

In the early game Saturday, Erin Goodrum had a double and a single. Siarah Walker, Lexi Saffell and Annika DeJarnett had singles. Madison Lewellyn pitched for Wellington, spreading out seven hits and striking out five.

WVAC got a run in the fifth, and Wellington tied the game in the sixth with a run. WVAC managed a run in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.

Wellington nearly had two runs in the sixth. Goodrum doubled with one out, and Walker singled, moving Goodrum to third. Madison Goans pinch ran for Goodrum.

Wellington had what amounted to a double steal when Walker stole second, and while that play was developing, Goans scored from third.

On the next play Taylor Zimmerman reached base on a fielders choice, but Walker was out at home.

WVAC singled in a runner from third in the fifth.

Going into the seventh they were tied at one.

In the bottom of the seventh, WVAC led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielders choice. The runner then scored on another deep single to end the game.
