Wellington attorney Jack Potucek allegedly attacked at home Sunday morning

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A 33-year-old Wellington male has been arrested for an alleged attack of prominent attorney John “Jack” Potucek of Wellington at his home Sunday morning.

Charles L. Kitch, Jr., 33, of Wellington was arrested, charged and confined with aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass.

Potucek, 72, who is the Sumner County Counselor for the county commissioners, appears to be in good condition according to sources at his office. He is currently convalescing at home. There was no concussion, the source said.

According to Tracy Heath, Wellington Police Chief, the assault occurred on the 1000 block of North Washington at Potucek’s home Sunday at 8 a.m. Heath said Potucek was alerted to the suspect who was in the back enclosed porch area.

“It appeared to be an unprovoked attack,” Heath said.

The assailant allegedly had an object in his hand that was used to hit Potucek on the head. The altercation came suddenly when Potucek had opened the door. The attack continued from the enclosed porch area to the back yard where Potucek successfully got the attention of a neighbor, who then contacted Sumner County 911.

“We are currently looking at a motive as part of our investigation,” Heath said.

Potucek was treated and released that morning at Sumner Regional Medical Center.

Kitch, Jr. will now await formal charges by Sumner County Attorney Kerwin Spencer, who will have 48 hours to determine whether to go with the charges made by the WPD, amend those charges, or dismiss them. Kitch Jr. is currently in custody at Sumner County Jail. His bond has been set at $100,000.
