by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Make it a clean sweep for the Wellington baseball and softball teams in Winfield Thursday afternoon at the Broadway Sports Complex.

The Crusader baseball team would defeat the Vikings 5-2 in game one before destroying Winfield in game two 15-0.

The WHS girls softball team swept Winfield aside, 8-5 and 8-3.

In the boys game, after three scoreless innings, Wellington would score in the fourth and fifth inning. The Vikings scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 4-2. But in the final inning, Wellington would score one run to preserve the win.

Both teams had six hits and two errors. Connor Phelps went 2 of 4, singling in the fourth and doubling in the seventh. Cameron Bartelson had an RBI double and Chevy Nuss had an RBI single.

Therin Frame got the win for the Crusaders, allowing two runs over five innings. He struck out three, walked two and gave up four hits.

In the second game, Wellington drilled Winfield with a 15-0 route after four innings. The Crusaders opened with a 6-0 first inning lead and expanded it to 13-0 after two. After a scoreless third, Wellington got two more runs to secure the run-rule – its first of the season.

Wellington’s Cade Phelps was the winning pitcher allowing three hits, no walks, and getting one strikeout. Winfield had three pitchers allowing 13 hits. It also committed a couple of errors.

Skyler Struble had a nice day at the plate, going 3-of-3.

The Wellington baseball team is now 6-8 and hosts Buhler Monday in a make-up game. This will be Senior Day and Wellington’s last home games of the season.

Game #1 Wellington 5 Winfield 2

Game #2 Wellinton 15 Winfield 0

—————

In the girls softball game, Wellington went into extra innings in game one, but would score three runs thanks in part of a Ryleigh Buck triple in the top of the eighth to pick up the huge 8-5 win.

Winfield opened with a run in the first off a T. Byerley double and led 3-0 in the second.

The Vikings would maintain that lead until the fifth inning when Wellington ripped off four runs. Madi Lewellen singled, Buck got hit by a pitch, and Brooke McCorkle singled Lewellen home. Erin Goodrum then smacked a 2RBI single and Jacelyn Buck followed with an RBI single.

But Wellington’s lead was short-lived as the Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Down 5-4 in the top of the seventh, Wellington’s Baylee DeJarnett singled and was eventually brought home on a RBI sacrifice by E. Goodrum.

Lewellen was the winning pitcher allowing eight hits, five runs and five walks. She struck out six.

Wellington would have 14 hits in the game. McCorkle had an outstanding game at the plate going 3 of 5, three RBIs and a double.

In the second contest, Winfield again took the early lead and Wellington rallied late. The Vikings took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning. DeJarnett would then triple in the third inning bringing Rusk home and in turn came home on a sacrifice to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead. Winfield scored a run in the bottom half of the inning.

The score remained 3-3 until the seventh inning when Wellington would get five runs off three hits. In that inning, Wellington reached base in every conceivable way. Rusk walked, DeJarnett singled and McCorkle reached base on a hit pitch.

Then a fielders choice brought Rusk home and Winfield would proceed to give up four more runs.

DeJarnett finished the game with a triple and a double. McCorkle was the winning pitcher for seven innings. She allowed four hits and three walks, while striking out two. Wellington had 10 hits to Winfield’s four. Vikings had four errors and Wellington had three.

The Crusaders will host Buhler Monday in a make up game. Wellington girls are 12-4.
