Wellington baseball team loses 1st round regional opener to Clay Center 5-2

Crusader logo for article.Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington boys baseball team was eliminated from the Class 4A Regional in Clay Center Wednesday, losing to the host 5-2 in the first round.

Clay Center scored three runs in the second and two in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Wellington couldn’t recover. Wellington out-hit Clay Center 5-4. Wellington committed four errors in the game while Clay Center was flawless.

Wellington tallied a home run – the first of the season when freshman Sky Branum ripped a long ball over the right-field fence in the sixth inning. Wellington had five hits in the game with Branum and Keaton Hartman collecting two hits. Rylan Biles was the losing pitcher, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, two walks while striking out four. Korbin Jones came in relief and in 3.1 innings pitched, allowing no hits, striking out three and walking two.

Clay Center would go on to win the regional championship defeating Chapman 3-1. Interestingly, Chapman had beaten Augusta 12-0 in the first round. 

The Crusaders end the season at 8-13, a significant improvement from winning three games.
