Wellington board hears proposal for a WHS girls golf team

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington school board heard a proposal from Wellington head boys golf coach James Ginter and USD 353 employee Vanessa Sawyer about implementing a girls golf program for the 2017-2018 school year.

At last week’s board meeting, Ginter and Sawyer said they have 10 girls who are interested in starting a program, which would be initiated in the fall of 2017. Currently, the only opportunity for girls to play high school golf is to play in the boys division in the spring.

“There are several schools our size which are playing golf already so a schedule would not be a problem,” Ginter said. “We also have several girls playing in the middle school so there is enough to sustain the program.”

Sawyer said there are ample scholarship opportunities for girls to make the venture worthwhile.

The proposal comes on the heals of approving a Wellington Middle School program initiated two years ago and is expected to restart for a third year this spring.

The school board took no action on the matter but will discuss it at the January meeting.

“I think that would be a great thing to have,” said Carol Hadorn, Wellington school board member.

In other action, the board approved:

•the hirings of Chris Torres as WHS assistant baseball coach; Mark Farley as para educator at Washington; Ashley Harms as library aide and Lila Marler as roving para;

•allowing school classrooms for 4-H day; and the gymnasiums for a Crusader Club sponsored MAYB tournament;

•a technology proposal that would allow new technology infrastructure; a director of curriculum and technology integration; and a middle school librarian/technology specialist;

•moving the school board meeting next month to Monday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m so board members and administration may attend the Kansas Association of School Board’s Governmental Relations Conference on Jan. 11-13;

The board adjourned from regular session around 8 p.m. and went into executive session for non-elected personnel. After 30 minutes, the board took no action and adjourned.
