Wellington boys defeat Conway Springs 63-59 to capture third in Chaparral tourney
Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington boys basketball team finished the Chaparral Roadrunner Tournament going 2-1 and getting a third-place trophy in the process. Wellington defeated 63-59 over Conway Springs. The win ends a very busy stretch in which the Crusaders played six games in 10 days.
Conway Springs falls to 8-4.
Wellington, now 9-4, will get a 10-day break before battling Augusta at home on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The Crusaders will then travel to Towanda-Circle on Tuesday, Feb. 6, before it starts its second rotation of league play. Conway Springs is also off for 10 days where it will host Kingman on Jan. 30.
“After our sixth game in 10 days, I wasn’t sure how our energy would be against Conway,” said Joe Newman, Wellington’s head boys basketball coach. “Out guys gutted it out and took care of business.”
Nolan Russell and Brody Weir each had double-doubles for the Crusaders, helping fuel the win. Russell had 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Weir had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Wellington led 15-11 against Conway Springs in the first quarter and held a 34-22 advantage at the half. Conway Springs would outscore the Crusaders in the second half, and had pulled within two with 39 seconds left on a Eli Benge 3-pointer.
Morice Ayers then hits a quick deuce on a Weir lob. After a Cardinal miss, Russell secured two free throws to secure the victory.
Conway Springs was led by Grant Fisher with 20 points. Eli Howard had 15 and Taylor Wykes 13. The full stats can be found here: Wellington v Conway Springs 1-21-23
