Wellington boys, girls win first round against Kingman; wrestlers lose

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls and boys basketball teams won their season openers Thursday night in their first round games of the Kingman Tournament Classic. The Wellington wrestling squad ended up four points short in its home opening dual with Pratt. 

Girls: Wellington 50 Medicine Lodge 23

First game jitters kept the game closer than it should have been. Still it was a blowout.

Wellington girls missed the first five open look layups and when an atrocious 9 of 25 at the free throw line.

“But the defense looked very good,” said Kevin Hackerott, Wellington head girls basketball coach. “We created a lot of turnovers.”

Wellington led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring Medicine Lodge 15-2 in the second quarter to lead 23-7 at the half. Savannah Cornejo was the leading scorer with 16 points.

Boys: Wellington 37 Medicine Lodge 27

Wellington didn’t exactly score a lot of points but it was a lot more than what the Indians scored. After trailing Medicine Lodge 9-6 at the end of the first quarter, the Crusaders would blank the Indians 12-0 in the second quarter to take an 18-9 half-time advantage.

The Crusaders would add to their advantage with a 12-6 output in the third.

Wellington’s Nick Becker led all scorers with 11 points.

There were five open divisions in the first home dual of the season. Wellington’s Jason Haydon and Vincent Ast picked up pins, while Andrew Horn won by technical fall and Andrew Pelkey got a decision.

138 — Andrew  Pelkey decisioned Joshua Ash 4-1.

145 — Ben DeJarnett was pinned by Cooper Crump :33 second.

152 — W- Justin Bruns wins open.

160 — Jason Haydon pins Taylor White, :34, third.

170 — Vincent Ast pins Josep Schmaucher, :55, first.
