by Bob Morris, Kingman County News — The Wellington boys basketball team held a six-point lead going into the fourth quarter of Saturday’s third-place game at the Kingman Eagle Classic but couldn’t close out, losing to host Kingman 48-42 in double overtime.

It was the second time in the tournament that the Crusaders had to go past regulation in a game. Wellington needed triple overtime to beat Conway Springs in Tuesday’s opener, a 52-50 win.

Against the Eagles, Wellington trailed 15-9 in the first but came back to go up 34-28 by the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, though, the Crusaders couldn’t capitalize on shot and free-throw opportunities. Kingman tied the game with 10.9 seconds left in regulation but neither team could come up with the final shot.

The Crusaders and Eagles each exchanged a basket in the first overtime but the score remained tied. In the second overtime period, the Eagles went on a six-point run in the first two minutes and Wellington couldn’t convert enough shots. Several turnovers down the stretch didn’t help the Crusaders.

Cade Phelps led Wellington with 12 points and A.J. Snipes had 11.

In the other pool game, Wellington lost to Haven 51-47 Thursday. Haven won the tiebreaker to advance to the championship game, while the Crusaders won the tiebreaker with Conway Springs to move to the third-place
