Wellington boys golf team get eliminated on day 1, Brungardt makes 2nd day at Class 4A state tournament in Winfield

Ethan Brungardt

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington boys golf team had a tough outing at the Class 4A state tournament at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield.

The Crusaders finished 10th out of 12 teams on the first day. That did not get them to the second day which the top six advance. Wellington finished with a 357-team score.

Wellington freshman Ethan Brungardt did make it to day two as one of the six individuals not to be part of a finals qualifying team. He shot an 82 on day one, which was good enough to qualify for Tuesday. Then on day #2, he shot a 92 for a cumulative 174 over the two days.

Wamego won the state tournament shooting a 639 (320 on day 1 and 319 on day 2). Independence placed second and Bishop Miege finished third (the full scores can be found here).

The individual Wellington scores for the other five golfers on day one are as follows:

Owen Farley – 87,

Derek Rausch – 87,

Colten Clift – 101,

Easton Newberry – 112,

Marcus Provost – 118.

Overall, it was a very successful season for the Wellington golfers, who lost the bulk of their team from the previous two seasons when Wellington won a state championship in 2021 and a state runner-up in 2022. This year had just two starters return from the previous year and was a team comprised entirely of freshmen and sophomores.

Nevertheless, the team successfully won the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV and Class 4A Regional tournaments.

It should be an interesting season in 2024.
