Crusader logo for article.Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington b0ys may have had its biggest basketball win of the season.

After losing to Mulvane twice, the Crusaders defeated the Wildcats 76-51 in the fifth-place game of the Chaparral Roadrunner Classic.

Wellington hit on all cylinders this afternoon. The Crusaders opened with a 19-11 first-quarter lead and led 38-25 at the half. Wellington kept cruising, opening up a 54-36 lead before securing a 25-point win.

In a feat that probably has not been duplicated this season, Wellington outscored Mulvane in every single quarter.

The Crusaders dominated shooting, hitting nine 3-pointers in the game. Wellington had 22 deuces compared to Mulvane’s 12.

“We talked about this game being an opportunity to get our season headed in the right direction. A win over a team that has beaten us twice could get us rolling. We started off playing even and then Logan Swingle came in and provided a spark by hitting a three and a one. We never looked back from there.

Guys were diving on the floor for loose balls, sprinting the court, sharing the basketball, and hitting shots. We were firing on all cylinders.”

Jack Wright had a sensational day, scoring 21 points. Montel Tate had 17 and Banks Hinshaw 14, and Korbin Jones 12. This also was Wellington’s highest-scoring game of the season. The previous high was 71 points in a home game against Winfield.

Wellington was exceptional from the field with a 45.6 percent shooting percentage. They had nine 3-pointers.

But it wasn’t just shooting. Wellington won the battle of the boards getting 41 to Mulvane’s 30. The Crusaders had 10 steals and four blocks.

The Crusaders are n0w 4-7 and will travel to Winfield Thursday night.
