by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The 2021 Wellington boys tennis team has been named Big Cheese Athletes of the Week.
The boys team, consisting of Jax Cornejo, Hunter Worley, Kade Adams, Carson Rademacher, Justin Norris and Jack Wright recently finished fourth in the Class 4A State Tennis Tournament held in Topeka. This tied for the highest finish for a Wellington tennis team in school history. The teams also placed fourth in 1989, 1990, 2004 and 2010. Wellington was only two points away from overtaking Buhler for third place.
Individually, Cornejo in singles and the doubles team of Adams/Rademacher finished sixth. The Wright/Norris team finished 10th, and Worley qualified as a freshman, going 0-2 for the weekend.
For their efforts, each boy is a recipient of a large delicious Big Cheese Pizza at 324 North Washington.
