Wellington boys win season opener in Kingman against Sterling 50-47
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington boys basketball team is 1-0 with a big 50-47 victory over Sterling in the first round of the Kingman Tournament Thursday.
Crusader senior Trevor Nance poured in 20 points including 10 points in the third quarter to lift Wellington to victory. The game was nip and tuck the whole way which came down to the final buzzer.
After Wellington missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 16 seconds, Sterling looked to tie but was unable to get off a shot at the buzzer.
“That’s a tribute to our defense,†said Brian Buchanan, Wellington head boys basketball coach. “We played man to man all game and did a great job beating a salty Sterling team.â€Â
The Crusaders played a couple of freshmen at the varsity spot. A.J. Snipes scored 10 while fellow freshman Ian King had 6. Junior Wesley Gilmore poured in 10.
Wellington will now play Conway Springs at 4:40 p.m.
