Wellington Cross Country boys finish 12th at state meet in Wamego
Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington fall sports season is officially over and it has been a while that it was the cross-country boys who were the team to do it.
Wellington finished 12th out of the 12 full teams to go to the Class 4A Cross Country meet in Wamego Saturday morning. The Crusaders scored 297 points trailing McPherson which scored 269 points. Buhler won the meet with 51 with Wamego finishing second with 67 (remember lower scores are best in cross country).
Ryan Bacon was the highest finisher for Wellington placing 50th overall and 38th as far as getting team points were concerned. He ran with a time of 18:35.0 for a 5:58.5 mile average. In cross country, the top seven runners per team contribute to team scores. In this instance, Bacon was the 38th-placed runner contributing to a team score.
The other Wellington finishers, their place, their team score, their final time, and mile average are as follows:
Hunter Lough – 74th, 58th, 19:19.3, 6:12.7.
Conner Walker – 82nd, 63rd, 19:50.6, 6:22.8.
Camden Parkey – 86th, 67th, 20.07.8, 6:28.3.
Braden Ybarra – 90th, 71st, 20:21.1, 6:32.6
Caleb Sanders – 95th, DNP, 20:46.0, 6:40.6.
Jaxson Irey-Hurt – 97th, DNP, 20:49.6, 6:45.0.
This marked the first time Wellington qualified a cross country team since 1989. Wellington is losing Parkey and Ybarra but returns a nice nucleus next year.
