Wellington enrollment is up; Sumner schools stay put in classifications

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Despite the continuous comments on social media that people are moving away from Wellington in droves, the high school enrollment figures prove otherwise.

WHS reported 478 students – up from 469 in 2015-16. Subsequently, Wellington will remain in Class 4A, Div. I.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association released its 2016-17 classification list for all sports except football, Monday morning. Sumner County schools basically stayed put as did most of the schools surrounding them.

Conway Springs and Belle Plaine remain in Class 3A. Both schools have the same enrollment. Conway Springs has 188 while Belle Plaine has 180 students. Conway Springs dipped five students, while Belle Plaine increased three in 2015-16.

Oxford had 98 students putting the Wildcats in Class 2A. The school had 99 last year.

The other three schools: Argonia, South Haven and Caldwell are in Class 1A. Argonia reported with 49, Caldwell had 64, and South Haven had 61. Compared to 2015-16, Argonia was down two students, Caldwell was up by four students, and South Haven was down 11.
