Wellington Fire Department extinguishes fire at 2023 E. 7th in southeast Wellington this morning
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire at 2023 E. 7th in southeast Wellington earlier this morning. There were no injuries.
Upon arrival at 9:11 a.m., firefighters found a two-story wood frame house with heavy smoke showing and flames bursting from the back side of the house.
Firefighters entered the house to extinguish the fire in the second floor bedroom. A search determined there were no occupants remaining on the second floor.
The ceiling and wall covering in the bedroom were removed to extinguish the fire. According to Wellington Fire Chief Tim Hay, the fire started beside the wood burning stove flue on the first floor and moved upward toward the second story. The house is uninhabitable at this time and Red Cross was called to assist the occupants.
There was a delay in calling 911 as the occupants tried to extinguish the fire on their own, Hay said.
The home is owned by Melinda French. The estimated loss to the property is $20,000 and there is no insurance. Belle Plaine, Oxford and Mayfield Fire Departments provided mutual aid. The apparatus at the scene included an aerial ladder, two engines, one ambulance and five pickups.
