Wellington girls dominate home invite with 20 stroke victory; Viramontes shoots 78 tying for third

Taryn Viramontes tied for third at the Wellington Invitational on Monday.

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington girls dominated the home invitational held Monday at the Wellington Golf Club.

Wellington scored 334 points, outdistancing Buhler and McPherson, which both shot 354. Winfield was a distant fourth at 378. Full results can be found here.

“It was a great day for the ladies to win their home tournament,” said Vanessa Sawyer, Wellington co-head girls golf coach. “It was especially gratifying for the seniors who have put in so much time on this course.”

Wellington’s Taryn Viramontes was the team’s high scorer, shooting a 78, tying for third. This was her best score this season thus far. She shot a 39 on the front nine and 39 on the back. Viramontes was very consistent, playing par on 10 holes and never having a double-bogey.

Freshman Kaselyn Carroll continues to impress, placing fifth with an 82 score. She shot a 12-over par and birdied holes No. 14 and 15.

Claire Ginter places tied for seventh.

Claire Ginter shot an 85, tying her for seventh. She finished tied for seventh with an 85. She parred seven holes.

Two Wellington girls, tied for the team’s fourth-best score, Presley Cornejo and Raynee Miller, both shot an 89. Georgia Gulick shot an 89 for the 10th-best score.

Wellington has incredible depth this season and had girls who weren’t in the varsity top six score better than participants from other schools. Ava Bales tied for 17th with a 95, and Haley Gulick shot a 97 for 22nd place.

There were 66 players in the tournament on Monday. Andi Buschborn of McPherson was the top individual golfer with a 75. Anica Paulsrud of Buhler placed second with a 7,7 and Brodie Kuhn of McPherson tied with Viramontes for third with a 78.

It was a long day for the 12 school tournament. The play lasted longer than 5:30 p.m.
