by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Roundup of Thursday Wellington sporting events…

GIRLS SOFTBALL

The Wellington girls softball team picked up two more wins and have now won five-of-six. Wellington defeated Mulvane 15-7 and 12-2 to improve its record to 10-8. The Crusaders battle Augusta on Monday in a hugely important game as far as seeding is concerned (see story here).

On Thursday at the Mulvane Sports Complex, Wellington dominated from the onset. Kaitlyn Hain opened the day with a triple that brought two runners home in the top of the first. Wellington would go onto score seven runs in the third inning with singles by Mykiland French and Lexi Clift. It was 11-3 after three innings.

Mulvane would chip away the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth before Wellington secured the with with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Wellington had 12 hits to Mulvane’s nine. Both teams committed two errors.

Heidi Gulick was the winning pitcher allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Wellington saw the ball well today, racking up 12 hits in the game. Shiney Hughes, French, Airalyn Frame and Clift each racked up multiple hits.  Wellington tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Clift led the way with four.

In the second game, Wellington wrapped things up with a six-inning run rule.

The Crusaders took a 5-0 lead in the first and held an 8-0 advantage after two.

Wellington pitcher Madison Baker held Mulvane to three hits over six innings and striking out 12.

Wellington had 12 hits with Gulick and Hughes both getting doubles. Rylee Rusk was three-of-four at the plate.

This was the second time Wellington and Mulvane squared off. On April 6, Wellington won 8-4 and 13-12. Obviously on Thursday, this was a much better outing for the Crusaders.

WHS BASEBALL

The Crusader boys did not have the same kind of day as the girls, losing to Mulvane 16-6 and 10-o.

In the first game, Wellington tied the game at 5-5 with a four-inning output in the top of the fourth. Banks Hinshaw started the big inning with a single. Brayden Macias then singled bringing in pinch-runner Trace Witham. He in turn came home on a Keaton Hartman fielders’ choice. Mulvane then committed two errors, that brought two more runners home.

After a two-run Mulvane output in the bottom half of the inning, Wellington narrowed the game back to a run when R.J. Clift reached base on a hit pitch and came home on a Macias RBI grounder. It was 7-6 Mulvane going into the bottom half of the inning.

But then everything fell apart. Mulvane singled three times and benefited from a Wellington error to lead 11-6 going into the sixth. Then in the bottom half of the sixth, Mulvane scored five runs on a double, three walks and three singles.

Mulvane had 14 hits to Wellington’s six. Mekhi Haskins-Ybarra was the losing pitcher. Wellington had three others in relief. The Crusaders had 151 pitches to Mulvane’s 109.

In the second game, Mulvane pitcher Myers threw a five-inning no-hitter as the Wildcats easily run-ruled the Crusaders. Wellington didn’t help itself with four errors. Mulvane had nine hits.

Trace Witham was the only Wellington batter to reach base on an error.

Carson Nugen was the losing pitcher.

Wellington, now 2-16, hosts Augusta on Monday.

BOYS GOLF

The Wellington High School golfers are now six-for-six tournaments with yet another tournament victory at the Goddard Eisenhower Invitational at the Tex Consolver Golf course.

The team scored a 307, besting Maize South by only three strokes and Andover Central by six.

The team was again led by Deitrek Gill – second), Blake Saffell – fourth and Jace Lawrence – 10th. Also contributing to the four man score was Brett Wyckoff with an 84.

Rounding out the scoring for the Crusaders were Peyton Linker and Laken Smith, both firing 87s on the day.

“The team continues to show grit and determination as we finished up our regular season undefeated,” said James Ginter, Wellington head golf coach.

Next up for the WHS golf team is the league tournament hosted by Rose Hill at Derby Country Club next Tuesday at 9 a.m.

“The boys are excited to defend their back-to-back league championships, hoping to continue the streak,” Ginter said.
