Wellington girls drop from No. 3 to No. 4, despite remaining undefeated

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The undefeated Wellington girls demolished a good Clearwater team on the road 56-34 in what head coach Eric Adams described was the best defensive effort he has seen as a head coach. The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association recognized Wellington’s big win by dropping it a notch in the latest poll released today.

The Crusaders are ranked No. 4 in today’s poll, down from No. 3 from the Dec. 20 poll. McPherson, which defeated Circle 48-22, leaped frogged Wamego and Wellington – going from No. 4 to No. 2.

The reason for the poll movement may have been because of a Saturday, Dec. 17 game in which McPherson defeated 5A St. James Academy, which in turn just lost to No. 1 4A Bishop Miege Friday 62-60 in overtime. That game was played just three days before the Dec. 20 poll and may have not been considered then.

On the boys’ side, Wellington remained at No. 8 for the second consecutive time. Here are today’s Class 4A polls:

4. Wellington
5. St. George- Rock Creek
6. Andale
7. Fort Scott

10. (tie) Eudora and Louisburg.

Of note: No. 4 Wellington will be hosting No. 6 Andale Friday.
