Avery Rusk drives to the basket in fifth place game vs. Sunrise Academy.
by Bob Morris, Kingman County News — The Wellington girls basketball team won the fifth-place game at the Kingman Eagle Classic Saturday, beating Sunrise Academy 62-44.
The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter, but the Lady Crusaders pulled away in the second quarter. They held Sunrise to six points and scored 20, going up 31-17 at halftime.
Wellington kept that cushion throughout the second half. Avery Rusk led the Lady Crusaders with 23 points. Tayland French and Lauryn Snipes each scored 12 points.
The Lady Crusaders opened the Eagle Classic with a 46-39 win over Conway Springs Tuesday, but dropped a 52-44 game to Haven Thursday. Because Conway Springs beat Haven 55-35 in the other pool game, Conway held the tiebreaker to go to the championship game and Haven had the tiebreaker to go to the third-place game.
