Wellington girls get fifth straight victory with convincing 49-27 victory over Winfield

Wellington’s Lauryn Snipes comes down with the rebound over Winfield defenders – a repeated story all night.
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Tack on a fifth straight win for the Wellington girls basketball team, as it overwhelmed visiting Winfield Tuesday night 49-27.
Holding Winfield to just three points in the first 12 minutes, the Crusaders would cruise to a 22-point victory against a team that was 5-3 going in.
A year ago, people may remember, Winfield gave Wellington its toughest test of the regular season, losing by three points at the buzzer after failing to make a trey to send it into overtime. This game had little of that excitement.
“We just got after it tonight defensively,†Adams said. “We played energy and fast.â€
The Vikings had no answers for the Crusaders especially on the boards where Wellington clearly had the advantage. The Crusaders opened up a 10-3 lead and was comfortably in front 25-8 at the half.
Winfield double its output in the third, but Wellington outscored it 19-10 nonetheless. Winfield’s only victory was in the fourth with a 9-5 output when the reserves were in.
Avery Rusk was again the leading scorer for the third straight game with 14 point, sharing game-high honors with Lauryn Snipes, who had 14.
Winfield was led by Sarah Hammer with 9.
The Crusaders are 5-0 in January, but things get significantly tougher next week when it plays in the highly competitive Haven Wildcat Classic Tournament.
Wellington will battle Rose Hill, 9-0, the No. 2 seed. This could be the second of four meetings between these two squads, who play each other in league and will be in the same sub-state. The Rockets beat the Crusaders in overtime right before Christmas break – the last loss Wellington endured. Rose Hill beat Andover Central 64-49 tonight.
