Wellington girls get the bats rolling in sweep of Buhler

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington head softball coach T.D. Buck said there are three things a team has to do in the sport to be successful: field, pitch and hit. Going into its game with Buhler, Buck said the Crusaders were doing OK on the first two aspects of the game, but terrible on the third.
The Crusaders finally got the bats going on a gorgeous spring Monday at Worden Park beating Buhler 6-3 and 16-1.
Wellington would smack out six hits in the first stanza and 17 in the nightcap to improve to 4-6 for the season.
Wellington opened the double-header with a five-run first inning in the first game. Avery Rusk hit a sacrifice fly, Delaney Parkey singled, Gracie Fink singled and an error followed suit to give the Crusaders a 5-1 advantage.
Brooke McCorkle was in the circle going seven innings and allowing four hits and three runs while striking out 10.
Jenna Rausch is running the bases in game one helping Wellington to a 6-3 victory.
Buhler scored two runs late including a solo home run in the seventh but Wellington preserved the victory with a infield pop fly catch as the northern Crusaders left the game with the bases loaded.
In game two, everything came together for Wellington. Jacelyn Buck got things rolling with a 2RBI home run as Wellington shellacked Buhler for a 7-0 lead after one inning. It got better as the Dukes scored two runs in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth for a 16-1 run-rule win. Wellington out slugged Buhler 17-6 and committing just one error.
Wellington pitcher Annika DeJarnett went all four innings holding Buhler to one run on six hits, striking out one and never walking a player.
Of the 17 hits, McCorlke, Buck, Parkey, Lexi Clift, Avery Rusk and Rylee Rusk all collected multiple hits.
