Wellington girls golf team wins Andale Invitational, breaks individual and team records
Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington Crusader girls golf team came away with the championship at the Andale Invitational at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney on Monday, edging out 5A contender Andover and topping McPherson in a competitive field.
Senior Claire Ginter led the way with a school-record 73 (+1), earning medalist honors after defeating Andover’s Reagan Doosenbery in a sudden-death playoff. Ginter’s round marked both a personal best and a new program record.
Backing her up was senior leader Taryn Viramontes, who showed her trademark consistency by carding a solid 76 (+4). Viramontes’s steady round was crucial in keeping the Crusaders atop the leaderboard as the competition pressed.
The Crusaders showed their depth with contributions throughout the lineup. Freshman Georgia Gulick impressed with an 83, while senior Presley Cornejo followed close behind with an 84. Freshman Kaselynn Carroll added an 87, and classmate Raynee Miller turned in a 92. Senior Haley Gulick rounded out the effort with a 93.
Wellington placed five golfers inside the top 15, a testament to both the team’s depth and consistency. With strong play from both veterans and newcomers, the Crusaders held off all challengers to secure the team title and bring home the gold.
Wellington also beat the previous school team record by 15 shots.
