(Update, Friday — 1:30 p.m)  Editor’s note: Several tournament golf scores have been changed since the article was first published. The article below reflects those changes, plus some additional information.

Sumner Newscow report — Yesterday afternoon, the Wellington girls’ golf team placed third in the Hesston Pre-State Tournament. The Crusaders got to see Wamego, Topeka Hayden, Winfield and McPherson – all teams they will possibly face in the state tournament next October if they do so qualify. The Crusaders placed third Thursday with a 353 score – or +73 to Par. Wamego won the tournament with a 343 (+63 to Par), and Topeka Hayden scored a  349 (+68 to Par). The full scoring is as follows:

Presley Cornejo was the top golfer for Wellington, shooting an 83 (+13 over Par) and tying for 11th place. Claire Ginter and Taryn Viramontes both tied for 14th with an 85 (+15 over par).

Other Wellington scores were:

•Bella Angleton, tied 42nd, 100;

•Kenna Maxwell, tied 60th, 109;

•Kadynce Aufdengarten, 70th, 114;

•Haley Gulick, tied 75th, 117.

Wellington Girls Golf Co-Head Coach Vanessa Sawyer states:

“So we had an awesome opportunity to play in a special tournament this year dubbed “Pre-State.” 4A teams from all over the state were invited to play in the tournament hosted at the location where this year’s state will take place.  It. Was. A. Hot. One.”

There were over 20-plus teams in the tournament. Interestingly enough, the top three teams in this tournament were the top three placers at the 2023 State Tournament last year. Winfield was also a fourth-place finisher last season. So, this tournament truly was billed as advertised – a “Pre-State” tournament.

“We’re very proud of the determination and perseverance of this squad. We have no doubt that we will continue to grow from here,” Sawyer said.

Addison Douglass of Wamego shot a 68, the only girls to shoot under par. She won Class 4A as a freshman and sophomore.
