Wellington girls golfers place 4th in large Hutchinson Invitational
Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington girls’ golf team placed fourth in the 18-hole varsity tournament at Carey Park at the Hutchinson Invitational Thursday afternoon.
“The girls played great yesterday in a very large tournament,” said Vanessa Sawyer, co-head girls golf coach. “They are continuing to battle and prepare for the postseason. We went up against some bigger schools and prevailed over the 4A schools present.”
Wellington finished with 359 team points. Hays won the tournament with a 337. Manhattan had a 339 and Maize 347. Wellington outdistanced Garden City for fifth place with 365. Other scores were: 6. Winfield 371, 7. McPherson 380, 8. Newton 382, 9. Dodge City 383 and 10. Goddard Eisenhower 392. There were 11 other teams in the tournament.
Individually, freshman Claire Ginter finished in the top 10 with an 83. Kasiah Richmond was tied for 18th with an 89. Other golfers were: Taryn Viramontes 93 (31st place), Aubrey Hunt 94 (tied 32nd), Elly DeJarnett 108 (68), Evelyn Trafecanty 112 (tied 82) and Presley Cornejo 121 (tied 102).
