Wellington girls have clinched 3rd straight league title, boys can’t outrun Collegiate
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow – The Wellington girls have won a third consecutive Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV Championship and will get another banner on the wall. Wellington had no problem disposing of Wichita Collegiate 71-17.
No such luck for the boys, who lost to Collegiate 61-40.
The girls’ basketball program never put a banner on the wall until 2016. Next year, it will have four after winning the league outright on Tuesday. Wellington goes into its home game against Andale on Thursday.
The standings are as follows:
| Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League – Div. IV | ||
| GIRLS | League | Overall |
| Wellington | 9-0 | 18-1 |
| Clearwater | 7-2 | 12-7 |
| Andale | 6-3 | 12-7 |
| Rose Hill | 2-7 | 5-14 |
| Collegiate | 2-7 | 3-16 |
| El Dorado | 1-8 | 1-18 |
Wellington made mincemeat out of Collegiate – easily taking a 15-2 first-quarter lead and holding a 43-9 at the half en route to victory.
The Crusaders were led by Britt Zeka with 15. Valerie Norwood had 12, Lyndi Barton 12, Kirstyn Gregory 11, Dru Zeka 10, Ella Goodrum 6, Ella Wright 2 and Cruz Cornejo 2.

In the boys’ game, Wellington got off to a good start grabbing a 15-10 first-quarter lead, but saw the high-flying Collegiate take over the game and cruise to a 21-point lead. At one point Collegiate scored 12 consecutive points to seize the lead and closed out the half on a 30-6 run.
“Turnovers and poor shot selection quickly turned into Collegiate fast-break points,” said Joe Newman, Wellington’s head boys basketball coach. “We had too many empty possessions and dug ourselves an insurmountable deficit at half.”
Wellington matched Collegiate in the second half, only getting outscored 21-19. Newman attributed this to being more patient and playing to the strength of its half-court offense.
“It’s natural to want to try and run with Collegiate but it’s not sustainable,” Newman said.
Scoring for Wellington were Brody Weir 11, Dusty Bannister 7, Sky Branam 6, Morice Ayers 5, Grady Norris 4, Nolan Russell 4, and Landyn Glenn 2.
Collegiate was led by Carter Drumright with 15, Sebastian Hines-Turner 13 and David Chege 10.
Wellington boys are 12-7 and with the loss have fallen in a tie for eighth with Concordia at 12-7 in the Class 4A-West standings. Rose Hill is at 11-8.
