Wellington girls lose wild 18-15 game to Hoquiam, Wash.
by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls staged a couple rallies, but still came up short in a wild 18-15 loss to Hoquiam in their third game of the 16U Softball World Series, Sunday in Florida.
Wellington overcame a 10-5 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 10. Neither team could score in the seventh.
Hoquiam (Washington) scored eight runs in the top of the eighth. Wellington did not give up though, and scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning but the rally fell short.
Wellington had 16 hits to 17 for Hoquiam.
In the bottom of the eighth, Siarah Walker doubled, Madison Lewellen, Lexi Saffell and Anika DeJarnett all singled in the eighth inning rally.
Hoquiam had four hits in its half of the eighth, but took advantage of some errors and walks, to get eight runs.
But the game was almost over earlier. Heading into the bottom of the sixth Wellington trailed 10-5. DeJarnett drove in a run with a single, and Taylor Zimmerman had a bases loaded triple to tie the game.
Wellington had jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first, but trailed 6-4 after four innings.
For Wellington, Taylor Zimmerman had a home run, a triple and a single, going 3-for-4 at the plate and six RBIs.
Siara Walker drove in two runs with a double. Lexi Saffell was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Madison Lewellen, Erin Goodrum and Baylee DeJarnett each had two singles. Also getting hits for Wellington were Jenna Rausch, Siarah Walker, Gracie Fink and Annika DeJarnett.
Madison Lewellen pitched the entire game for Wellington.
For Hoquiam, English Hyde had a home run and two doubles. Kylie Stewart had four hits.
