Wellington girls make it four in a row with win over Augusta

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls basketball team improved to 6-3 with a 59-45 victory over Augusta Friday with a high powered offensive performance.

Avery Rusk scored 23 points and Lauryn Snipes had 21 in a non-league contest with Augusta. The Crusaders shot an outstanding 53 percent from field and going 6 of 12 from the 3-point arch.

The Crusaders opened the game establishing a 12-2 lead and would never trail thereafter. Wellington mostly held a double digit lead throughout and would never let Augusta get much closer than eight.

Wellington hopes to make it five straight when it hosts Winfield Tuesday in a girls-only night. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. following the junior varsity contest starting at 6 p.m. The Crusaders will then play in one of the top high school girls tournaments in the state of Kansas when they travel to Haven. As of last Monday, Wellington would be the eighth seed, even with just three losses.

The Crusaders shot 23 of 41 from the field while junior guard Rusk was particular hot going 9 of 14, Snipes was 7 of 12.

Wellington led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter, 32-23 after two. It was 41-31 after three quarters before the Lady Dukes ripped off 18 points for the 14-point win.

Crusaders also looked better at the foul line, going 7-of-10.

Snipes led in rebounds with seven. Jacelyn Buck came in and created four steals.
