Wellington girls softball team sweep Andale/Garden Plain; boys not as fortunate

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls softball team got its first double-header win of the season and it came at the end of the hands of Andale/Garden Plain.

The Wellington boys baseball team fell to defeat to Andale-Garden Plain 10-0 and 10-2.

The game were delayed for two games due to the cold, snowy weather on Monday.  Wellington travels to Winfield next Monday.

Girls pick up wins

Wellington improved its record to 4-6 with two big wins over league rival Andale/Garden Plain.

In the first game, Wellington was led by sophomore McKenna Oathout, who racked up four RBIs on two hits to lift the Lady Dukes to victory.

She contributed with a single in the first and a triple in the fourth in which Wellington scored three runs in both innings.

In the first inning, Carlie McComb, Oathout and Buck scored to put Wellington in front 3-0. Andale would score a run in the third.

Then in the top of the fourth, Shelby Hamel, Brianna Mullen and McComb loaded the bases. Then Oathout stepped to the plate and blasted a triple to right field which put the Crusaders in front 6-1.

But Andale made a comeback in the bottom half of the inning with two home runs to cut the lead to 6-4.

Peyton Adams then hit a home run in the sixth. Andale responded with a run. Then in the top of the seventh, Buck tripled and came home on a Jaden Dry single.

Leading 8-5, Wellington then held on to dear life, as Andale quickly narrowed the lead from 8-5 to 8-7 with a two-run homer. But Wellington retired the next three batters and held on to victory.

In game two, the opposite occurred. Andale raced out to the lead, but Wellington was making the comeback.

Andale rolled to a 4-0 lead in three innings. But in the fourth, McComb singled and Oathout reached base on a fielders’ choice. Both came him on Indian errors.

Down 5-2, Wellington scored three runs in the top of the sixth. Freshman Erin Goodrum opened the inning with a home run and from that point on, it was Wellington’s game. Peyton Adams and Taylor Zimmerman scored runs to tie the game at 5-all before the inning ended.

Then in the seventh, Wellington would score six runs, including a two-run Jade Dry homer.

Wellington ended up hitting the ball 18 times in both games, while committing two errors in each.

Dry won the first game allowing nine hits, seven runs, five earned and one walk. She struck out five.

In game two, Dry was again the winning pitcher. P. Adams started and pitched for 2.1 innings. E. Goodrum pitched 2.2 innings.

Wellington boys swept

The Wellington boys had a really bad evening at getting outscored 20-2 in two games.

In game one, Andale opened with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and expanded the lead to 8-0 after two.

In the fourth inning, two more runs made it 10-0. The game ended after five. Andale had seven hits to Wellington’s one. The Indians had two errors.

In game two, Andale opened with a 1-0, 5-0 and 9-0 lead in the first three innings.

Wellington didn’t get its first score until the top of the fifth when Houston Sober scored. In fact he had both of the runs for the Dukes. Wellington finished game two with six hits. Andrew Horn had a double.

In the first game, Jalen Macias pitched two innings, allowing five hits, eight runs and five walks while striking out three. Ben DeJarnett, in two innings pitched, allowed two hits, two runs, and one walk.

In game two, Wellington had three pitcher in six innings. Jerrod Huck allowed six hits, five runs, five earned runs and two walks. He struck out one. Wesley Gilmore and Trevor Nance also pitched.
