Wellington girls softball team sweep, Wellington boys golfers open season

Sports todayby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington varsity golf team opened its season at the Andover Invitational at Crestview Country Club. Meanwhile, the Wellington girls softball team was in El Dorado sweeping away their opponent.

Wellington finished with a team total 357 points, placing 10th.

“We did not have an individual place in the top 10, but I was pleased with the progress we have made as a team over the first month of practice,” said James Ginter, Wellington head golf coach. “The course was difficult, but our team will learn from this and be better for it.”

Graysen DeJarnett had the best score for Wellington, scoring 86. He shot 42 in and 44 out.

Skyler Crittenden had an 88 with 45 out and 43 in.

Jonah Luna shot a 90 – 49 out and 41 in.

Joe Friesen rounded out the team scoring with a 94 – 43 out and 50 in. Team scores are determined with the top four golfers per six-man team.

Ty Wilson shot a 94 with a 47 in and 47 out. Carson LeGrand had a 99 – 54 in and 45 out.

Wellington hosts its season invitational this Thursday. Shotgun start is at 1 p.m.

Wellington girls win

The Wellington girls improved to 5-1 with a doubleheader sweep of El Dorado Monday afternoon.  The Lady Dukes defeated El Dorado 15-6 in game one and 17-7 in game two.

Wellington almost run-ruled the Wildcats despite getting just one more hit in the first contest. The Crusaders had 11 hits to El Dorado’s 10.

The Crusaders took advantage of five El Dorado errors in the first contest. The bulk of Wellington’s scoring came in two innings. Trailing 2-1 going into the second, Wellington scored five runs to take a 6-2 lead. Ryleigh Buck would hit a 2RBI single followed by Brooke McCorkle 2RBI home run over the left field fence.

Later in the fourth, the visiting Crusaders opened with a Madi Adams double, followed by a Bailey DeJarnett single and McCorkle double. Jacelyn Buck would follow with a single and the route was on.

Madi Lewellen was the winning pitcher getting four strikeouts while allowing 10 hits and two walks.

In game two, Wellington got its first run-rule of the season leading by 10 runs after sixth.

Wellington jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Lewellen and J. Buck singles in the top of the first but El Dorado scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Crusaders then scored five runs in the top of the second which started with a DeJarnett RBI double, and followed by a J. Buck 2RBI double.

Leading 6-2, Wellington added to its lead with three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to secure its early victory.

McCorkle recorded her first win as a freshman hurler, going six innings, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out two.
