Wellington girls split while the Crusader boys lose twice in Winfield
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington High School girls softball team split with Winfield while the boys were swept Monday evening at the Broadway Sports Complex in Winfield.
The Winfield girls would beat Wellington in game one 6-3. The Crusaders rebounded to beat the Vikings in a six-inning run-rule game in the nightcap 12-2. On the boys side, Winfield beat Wellington 4-3 in game one and 9-2 in game two.

One bad inning really made the difference between a double-header sweep and a split.
That occurred in the bottom of the third inning in game one.
Wellington was holding to a 2-0 lead after McKenna Oathout and Carlie McComb both scored in the top of the first. Winfield had five of its eight hits in the third and brought six runners home to give the Vikings a 6-2 lead. The frustrating thing about this game is Winfield never got past first base the rest of the game.
In the second game, Wellington dominated play ripping off 16 hits to Winfield’s two. Both McComb and Ryleigh Buck were 4-for-4 at the plate.
Wellington opened with a 2-0 lead thanks to a Buck 2RBI double in the first inning. Winfield responded with two runs in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the third, Wellington opened up a 7-2 lead as McComb, Buck, Erin Goodrum, Madi Adams and Peyton Adams all singled and eventually scored.
Wellington then added five runs in the top of the sixth when McComb, Buck, E. Goodrum, M. Adams and Abby Goodrum singled.
Peyton Adams was the winning pitcher allowing just two hits, no walks and striking out five.
In game one, Dry was the losing pitcher allowing six hits, no walks and getting three strikeouts.
Wellington is 5-7 for the season, and will come home next Monday for the first time in over a month to host Circle. Games start at 4:30 p.m. at Worden Park.

Wellington boys lose
The Wellington boys, after getting off to a 6-1 start, are currently on a five-game skid after falling to Winfield twice Monday afternoon.
Wellington lost a tough one in game one with its pitching ace Trevor Nance on the mound. Both teams scored runs to open the game in the first inning. Wellington then added a run in the second and fourth inning and was clutching a 3-1 going into the fifth inning.
But Winfield scored three runs in the fifth and took the lead. Wellington could not score thereafter.
Both teams smacked out nine hits. Wellington had one error.
In game two, Will Adler, Mr. Everything in Winfield, was the winning pitcher for the Vikings. Even though Wellington smacked out eight hits, the Crusaders couldn’t deliver the victory. Winfield had 10 hits and took advantage of six Wellington errors.
Winfield took a 1-0 lead at the bottom of the first. Then in the second, the Vikings crucified the Crusaders with eight runs to led 9-0. Wellington could must just two runs in the top of the third and would never get any closer. Wesley Gilmore was the losing pitcher in the game.
Wellington returns home for the first time in a month when it hosts Circle.
