Wellington girls tennis team wins Big Cheese Athletes of Week
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Big Cheese Athletes of the Week is — who else? — the Wellington girl tennis team.
The state qualifying varsity players included doubles partners Jensen Lynnes and Lyric Cornejo, doubles Kadynce Aufdengarten and Ashlyn Gerten and singles player Kami Reichenberger that lifted Wellington to a state runner-up finish at the Class 4A State Tournament in Winfield last weekend.
Wellington accumulated 25 team points, tying Topeka Hayden for second place and then winning the tiebreaker. Lynnes/Cornejo finished fourth in doubles. Aufdengarten/Gerten placed eighth. Reichenberger finished eighth as well.
For their efforts, each individual Wellington girl tennis state placer receives a large delicious Big Cheese Pizza at 324 N. Washington.
