Wellington girls tie school record with 60-48 win over Collegiate; boys fall
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls basketball team has added another accomplishment to its resume this season. It has now tied for the most regular season wins in the program’s history.
Friday evening, the Crusaders beat Wichita Collegiate 60-48 to move to 18-0. That ties the mark set by the 2010 WHS girls team which went 18-2 en route to a 21-3 finish and a state tournament berth.
More importantly, the victory sets up a showdown with Circle for the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div IV championship at Crusader gymnasium Tuesday evening. The Lady Dukes have already beaten the Thunderbirds at their place.
A win at home Tuesday gives the Crusaders the outright league title for the first time in their history. A loss will mean they must beat Clearwater next Thursday to claim a tie.
Wellington’s Lauryn Snipes was out of the lineup with an eye injury Friday. She is expected to be back in practice on Monday.
But Wellington had its work cut out for it with its starting point guard and second leading scorer out of the lineup.
Sophomore Avery Rusk stepped in and filled the gap. She scored 24 points and had five 3-pointers, most of them in the second half.
Wellington opened with a 15-8 first quarter lead but Collegiate would outscore the Crusaders 14-13 in the second and was trailing 28-22 at the half.
The Crusaders came on strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans 20-7 and at one point leading by 22 points.
The fourth quarter saw the Spartans narrow the margin back to 12 outscoring the Lady Dukes 19-12 when many of the reserves were in.
Grace Mitchell added 22 points for Wellington and had five 3-pointers of her own. The Crusaders hit 11 3’s for the night.
Collegiate was led by L. Johnson with 17.
