Wellington girls win home invite… boys place 6th… Young, Walker win weight divisions (updated)
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls wrestling team took first place in the nine-team Wellington Invitational Saturday. The Wellington boys finished sixth out of 11 schools.
The Wellington girls scored 141 points. Winfield finished second with 89. Other team scores were Mulvane 76, Rose Hill 58, Andover 46, Circle 45.5, Clearwater 42, Ark City 20, and Wichita East 18. Rose Hill won the boys’ division with an impressive 264.5 points. Mulvane placed second with a 156.5. Winfield had 97, Clearwater 77, Wichita Southeast 48, Wellington 47, Ark City 37.5, Andover 30, Circle 21, Marion 20, and Wichita East 16.
The Wellington girls had two firsts, four seconds, and four thirds to win the tournament convincingly.
Nexy Young at 110 and Bri Walker at 130-135 were big winners.
Young, Wellington’s lone returning state qualifier in 2022-23, had a dominating day. She would pin all three of her opponents.
She pinned Addy Thrash of Andover at the 5:04 mark. She then pinned Ryleigh Page of Rose Hill at 4:46 and ended the day pinning teammate Aubri Rohrer at 58 seconds. She is now 5-1 for the year.
Walker, at 130-135, continues her rampage in the high school ranks going 4-0 for the day. She pinned Jericka Stiles of Mulvane at 3:06; Adriana Smithwick of Circle at 3:37; Lily Pendergrass of Ark City at 2:13, and Kasey Dillon of Mulvane at 2:39.
Walker is now 10-0 as a freshman.
Isabelle Cullens finished second at 115-120. She pinned Lahoma Kendrick of Ark City at :28, Natalia Jester of Mulvane at :19, and Xitlaly Meraz of Wichita North at 1:04. In the first-place match, she was pinned by undefeated Liannah Landreth of Mulvane in 1:02.
Kaylee Horinek placed second at 170, scoring the team 16 points. She pinned all three of her first opponents: Kora Sterling of Andover at 1:39, Alaicee Guzman of Wichita North at 1:32 and Allisa Lorouche of Clearwater at 1:35. She fell to Jazmin Wilson of Winfield by pin at 2:00 in the finals. Horinek is now 8-3 for the season.
Aubrey Hunt placed second at 190. After receiving a bye and a forfeit, she won in a tiebreaker against Abby Brenn of Winfield 5-3. That put her in the championship bracket, where she pinned Zoey Baker of Ark City at 1:26 before getting pinned by Payton Schlander of Rose Hill in :36.
Maddy LeValley finished second at 135. She would pin her first two opponents: Leticia Garcia of Wichita North in 2:48 and Taijonna Bryant of Andover in 2:45. She would then get pinned by Rachel Pierce of Clearwater at 2:55.
Third-place winners included Deighlynn Lea at 100-105, Rohrer at 110, Mikayla Ybarra at 140, and Maya Cornejo at 145.
Sophie Parkey finished fourth at 125 and Ellie Franke placed fifth.
On the boys’ side, Wellington’s Cayson Ramirez at 165 was the highest finisher for the Crusaders. He placed second and scored 16 of Wellington’s 47 points.
Ramirez pinned his first three opponents: Jaxon Gatton of Winfield at :57, Carson Flores of Circle at 1:12, and Leven Jones of Rose Hill at 3:38. He then decisioned Noe Alvarado of Wichita North in the first round of the championship bracket 8-2. He lost Bryan Wilson of Ark City by an 8-5 decision in the championship finals. Ramirez is 8-5.
Derek Lowe placed third at 285 when he pinned Nate Williams of Andover and Devan Caley of Winfield but lost to Milan Colvin of Rose Hill 9-1. In the championship bracket, he would lose to Austin Vanderhoof of Mulvane 11-4 before pinning William Buckley of Wichita South at 3:24.
Other Wellington boys’ results were:
106 – Cable Bogguss, fifth.
138 – Krystian Devine, sixth.
150 – Taylen Ramirez, eighth.
157 – Kenny Redford, eighth.
175 – James Redford, seventh.
190 – Jamar Armstrong, fourth.
