Wellington girls wrestling team wins regional championship.

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington girls wrestling team won the regional tournament in Circle this afternoon. Six girls have advanced on to sub-state – the preliminary tournament before state.

In the boys wrestling regional in Circle on Friday, only Hagen Wright advanced for Wellington at heavyweight, placing second.

For the girls, Wellington scored 115 points to clinch victory over 20 other teams. McPherson placed second with 84. Mulvane finished third with 76, Douglass 62, Chase County 59, Smoky Valley 45, Abilene 44, Council Grove 44, Circle 40, Augusta 36, Winfield 27, Bluestem 22, Buhler 20, Central Burden 18, Whitewater-Remington 15, El Dorado 12, Rose Hill 11, and Ell Saline 7.

Anna Cullens at 109 and Nexy Young at 115 finished first in their weight divisions. Cullens, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in her weight class at 27-0 would pin the No, 2 ranked wrestler Skyleigh Pflaster of Abilene in 2:48 of the match.

Other sub-state qualifiers were:

•Deighlynn Lea at 101 – placed fourth.

•Isabella Cullens at 120 – placed second.

•Kaitlyn Hain at 132 – placed second.

•Avery Burns at 235 – placed second.

Two other Wellington girls did not reach the top four and did not advance to sub-state.

•Alexis Patee at 170 – placed sixth.

•Rylee Dickinson at 126 – placed fifth.

The girls sub-state will be in Ellis on Friday and the boys will be in McPherson on Saturday.

A. Cullens was named outstanding wrestler of the regional.

For Cullens, it was solidification as she squared off against Skyleigh Pflaster, who came into the tournament undefeated at 9-0 and ranked No. 2 in the latest KWCA poll. Cullens had three matches and would pin Cora Thiel of Remington in 32 seconds, pin Noelle Peters of Smoky Valley at 5:38, before pinning Pflaster.

Young was also the big winner at 115, pinning Kizman Capps of Remington at :45, Amelthyst Hale of McPherson at 4:44 before pinning Tyelor Rozell of Douglass 3:22.

Three other girls wrestled in the regional finals.

Isabella Cullens (12-8) at 120 pinned Addison Evans of Remington but would lose by fall in the championship to Cadence Williamson of Leon-Bluestem 8-7.

Kaitlyn Hain at 132 (29-3) would pin Whitney Mantanona of Flint Hills 1:38, but lose to Jill High of Augusta for the second time in post season 4-1 in the championship.

Avery Burns (4-9) placed second after pinning Jennifer Calzada of Ell Saline before getting pinned by Emilie Schweizer of Buhler 10-1.

On the boys side, Wright had a great tournament winning by fall over Luke Young of Clay Center 2:49. He would then decision Gavin Bell of El Dorado 5-3 after losing to him a week ago in the district finals.

That set up the finals where he would lose to Hunter Scott of Mulvane 6-1.

Wellington sent five other wrestlers to regional, but none of them placed in the top four.
