Wellington golf team wins fifth straight tournament with dominating 291 score

Crusader logo for article.Sumner Newscow report — The dominating performance of the 2021 Wellington High School golf team continues. The Crusaders made it 5-for-5 by winning the Wichita Collegiate School Invitational at the Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.

Wellington shot a cumulative 291 to win over 10 other teams. The Crusaders finished 14 strokes over second-place Maize South at 303. The other team scores were Andover Central 307, Andover 329, Valley Center 330, Hesston 331, Wichita Trinity 334, Wichita Collegiate 339, Augusta 340, Andale 345, and Buhler 421.

Wellington’s Deitrek Gill shot a 69 to finish second. Luke Scheufler of Wichita Trinity finished first with a 65. Blake Saffell placed sixth with a 70, Peyton Linker finished ninth with a 74, and Brett Wycoff tied for 15th with a 78 to round out the team scoring.

Other Wellington individual scores were Laken Smith finishing with an 82 for 24th and Jace Lawrence with an 84 tied for 26th place.

The Cherry Oaks coarse is a Par 72, with a yardage of 6,268 feet.

There were 71 golfers in the golf tournament.

Gill, who shot a 3-under on Friday, had his personal best high school score. Linker, with a 2-over, also shot his personal best. Wycoff’s 78 was his personal best in a varsity tournament. He shot a 70 at the Andover Central JV tournament on April 20.

On Thursday, Wellington shot a 300 in Hesston on Thursday which was the best team score since the early 2000s until it shot a 291 yesterday. Wellington head coach James Ginter said since he has arrived that is the second-best score in his tenure that goes back into the mid 1990s. He said a team in 2000 shot a 288.

The Crusaders will host a JV Invitational on Monday. Wellington’s varsity then travels back to Hesston on Tuesday.
