Wellington Heat falls to Santa Barbara, play Nevada tonight in elimination game

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Santa Barbara Calif. Foresters lived up to their top billing with a 5-0 win over the Wellington Heat, Sunday in the second round of the NBC Championship Week World Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wellington will now battle the Nevada Griffons  tonight at 10 p.m. in an elimination game.

Santa Barbara’s Drew Van Orden gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out seven during his seven innings of work.

Wellington and Santa Barbara were tied in a scoreless stalemate for the first seven innings, before Garrett Mattlage scored after hitting a double. 

Then in the ninth, Santa Barbara broke the game open with four runs off of five hit and one error with Ryan O’Hearn on the mound for Wellington.

Matt Royal was the losing pitcher after just one inning of pitch. The Foresters would out-hit Wellington 12 to 3. The Heat committed one error.
