Wellington Heat go 3-2 over week; embark on important 3-game home stand, 3 WHS softball players attend showcase camp

Wellington Heatby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington Heat got an unexpected night off of baseball Monday night when the Owasso Angels could not make the trip because of bus problems.

The Heat resume play tonight when the Derby Twins come to town. Game time is 7 p.m. at Sellers Park.

Wellington is currently 12-8 overall and 7-8 in the Jayhawk League (see standings below).

Over the past week, Wellington has gone 3-2. The Heat won a crucial three-game series in Liberal over the weekend, getting two of three games.

The Heat lost the first game 10-8 to Liberal on Friday. But they came back to beat Liberal 12-2 an 6-2 on Saturday and Sunday.

This leaves the Heat in a muddled pack of four teams vying for second place. El Dorado is 8-7 and has a one-game lead over Derby and Wellington at 7-8. Liberal is following at 6-9 and Dodge City is 4-9. Hays Larks have a four-game lead at 12-3.

Wellington hosts an important three-game stretch this week with Derby coming in tonight, El Dorado on Wednesday and Derby again on Thursday. The Heat then head north to play the Hays Larks, hoping to get some revenge for the Larks three-game sweep at Sellers Park a couple weeks ago.

The Heat recently held a two-day “All American Showcase Camp” at Worden Park on June 18-19. Three Wellington girls participated in the camp including Carlie McComb, Abby Goodrum and Bailey DeJarnett.

There were 15 college coaches in attendance. According to the Heat website, the camp is unique in that it attracts college coaches, who are usually restricted because of NCAA rules and can only attend certain camps such as this one.

The camp included on-field instruction and evaluation and three scrimmages amongst themselves.
